A lively Irish jig with a distinctive modal sound – arranged for fingerstyle guitar with an emphasis on comfortable playing and musical simplicity.
The Lilting Banshee is a well-known traditional Irish jig, appreciated for its lively rhythm, flowing melody, and distinctive modal character. Played in 6/8 time, it is a wonderful example of how a relatively simple melody can create a captivating musical atmosphere.
Also known as The Miller of Glanmire, the tune has been part of the Irish traditional music repertoire for well over a century. It appeared under that alternative title in Francis O’Neill’s famous collection Music of Ireland, published in Chicago in 1903.
For fingerstyle guitar, The Lilting Banshee offers an enjoyable combination of rhythmic movement, melodic interest, and opportunities for simple accompaniment.

A Banshee That Sings?
The title itself is rather intriguing.
In Irish folklore, a banshee is a supernatural female spirit whose mournful cry is believed to announce an approaching death. The word lilting, on the other hand, suggests singing in a light, rhythmic, and melodic manner.
A lilting banshee is therefore something of a contradiction – a supernatural messenger of sorrow who seems to be singing a cheerful tune.
And indeed, the music is anything but mournful. With its bouncing jig rhythm and memorable melodic phrases, The Lilting Banshee has a lively, playful character.
The Sound of A Dorian
The Lilting Banshee is commonly played in A Dorian, a mode that gives the melody its characteristic sound.
A Dorian is closely related to A minor, but with a raised sixth note (F-sharp instead of F-natural). This small difference creates a distinctive musical colour – minor in character, but with a certain brightness and openness.
On the guitar, A Dorian also offers interesting possibilities for accompaniment. Open strings, simple bass notes, and harmonies built around A minor and G major can support the melody without overwhelming it.
The challenge is to preserve the natural flow of the jig while making the arrangement comfortable to play.
Traditional Music, Practical Guitar Arrangements
At Celtic Picking, I approach traditional tunes from a practical perspective.
My arrangements are not intended to be definitive versions of Irish traditional music. They are personal interpretations, created primarily for my own playing and shared with other guitarists who might enjoy them.
The emphasis is on comfortable fingerings, natural movements across the fretboard, and preserving the character of the original melody.
Where useful, I also adapt or transpose tunes to make them more suitable for the guitar.
With The Lilting Banshee, the aim is to let the melody and its lively 6/8 rhythm take centre stage, supported by a straightforward fingerstyle approach.
